TTI - Tool & Die Level III



Lays out, fits, and assembles parts to make and repair cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, or machinists' hand tools by performing the following duties. The responsibilities and requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Essential Functions:

  • Observes and listens to operating machines or equipment to diagnose machine malfunction and determine need for adjustment or repair.
  • Replaces defective part with new part or repairs or reproduces part from various kinds of metal stock.
  • Maintains and lubricates machine tools and equipment.
  • Studies blueprint to determine machining to be done and plans layout and assembly.
  • Studies blueprints, sketches, machine parts or specifications to determine type and dimensions of metal stock required.
  • Read calipers, depth gage, micrometers and dial indicators.
  • Measures, marks, and scribes metal stock to lay out for machining by other workers.
  • Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on metal stock surfaces.
  • Sets up and operates surface grinder to grind surface of parts.
  • Sets up and operates machine tools such as lathe, milling machine, sharpen and grind to machine to specifications, and verifies conformance of machined parts to specifications.
  • Machine parts and position them for assembly on worktable.
  • Smooth flat and contoured surfaces and fits parts to each other.
  • Dismantles dies or fixtures to examine parts for defect or to remove and repair or replace defective part.

Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
