CLM - Controls Engineer - Software/Firmware



The Controls Engineer is responsible for the design, development and implementation of the controls systems for HVAC products that meet or exceed best-in-class performance. The person will work as a member of a multi-disciplinary product development and product support team. The Controls Engineer has a firsthand knowledge and experience in the areas of embedded firmware and software development, software development tools, product life cycle management process, software modelling techniques, software testing, design for manufacturing, etc. The Controls Engineer will employ a balanced combination of advanced analytical techniques and experimental methods. Although the Controls Engineer’s prime responsibility will be software/firmware development, the Controls Engineer is expected to have a competent working knowledge of hardware electronics, hands-on skills with the lab/diagnostic equipment and tools, and familiarity with a stage gate product development process.

Essential Functions:

  • Develop appropriate firmware/software designs, product qualification, agency certifications, design documentation, etc.
  • Support system design engineering, product engineering, manufacturing, sales & marketing, quality and supply chain functions
  • Interface with vendors, customers and field personnel
  • Provide measurable contribution to several NPD projects and sustaining initiatives, as well as help supporting legacy products through their complete life cycle

Skills & Abilities

  • Education: Bachelor’s in electrical/Electronic Engineering or Computer Science with preferred emphasis on electronic controls system design is required.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of product development experience.


  • Various integrated development environments (IDE)
  • Defect tracking systems, version controls systems, requirements capture, system architecture modelling
  • Development and implement unit tests
  • HVAC control system design and applications
  • Use of IP, BACnet, LONtalk, and ModBus communication protocols
  • Embedded operating systems, including Linux, etc.

Other Requirements:

  • Programming languages C, C++, assembly, and Visual Basic
  • Multi-Protocol Controller (MPC) program development
